Ten years ago, Gebr. Vletter & Den Haan worked with thirteen software applications. From Microsoft Excel to Microsoft Access and back again. Today they work with one software system. Codeless’ specially tailored software.
Gebr. Vletter & Den Haan: “Even before Codeless came here, we did a lot by hand. We wrote on wooden signs and when we worked with computers we entered all the numbers and characteristics manually. Then around 2010 we were working cautiously with a software package that was widely used in the bulb sector. But the software was very general. We constantly ran into limitations. Everything felt cumbersome, there were overlaps or links whatsoever. We worked with thirteen systems and the normal word interface(!) We didn’t even know that was strange yet. We did know though that we wanted to move forward. And that that was not really possible with our system at the time. So we started looking for a solution; we discussed our question with an accountant, who in turn matched us with a software consultant. Although they knew little about lilies and we didn’t know much about computers, we were able to find a balance with each other very quickly.”
Codeless was able to improve the speed of work and reduce the margin of error at Gebr. Vletter & Den Haan. “I think the margin of error has been decimated with the arrival of Codeless. The entire process is automated, which means that errors are almost non-existent. Moreover, if something does go wrong in the software system, we can see very quickly and clearly where the mistake was made and by whom it was initiated. But what is especially nice: is ur thirteen sub administrations can all be found in that one system. Our employees no longer have to work with thirteen lists, but can all move forward with the Codeless system ”, says Gebr. Vletter & Den Haan.
That first software system, which was mainly commercial and production-oriented, pleased Gebr. Vletter & Den Haan so well that they also submitted a second request to Codeless, that of customized breeding software. “We no longer need to tinker with the commercial production package. Codeless keeps track of this for us and ensures that an update is done if necessary – for example, due to legislation. But in recent years we have had an increasing need for a good breeding system. This is particularly important for us to be able to properly record data. Phenotypes, such as flower size, stiffness of the stem, color of the leaf, etc., are by no means all observed from standard software.
You can easily overlook something while breeding lilies, but it is much easier when you have clearly documented all phenotypes in an easily workable system. It is then much easier to optimize the success rate of creating a good new variety. The system Codeless has created for us for this purpose supports this optimization and ensures that we save a lot of time.”
Gebr. Vletter & Den Haan is very pleased with the software application delivered by Codeless: “Codeless delivers powerful software. The screens are very fast. You can sort in a way that is not possible in Excel or Access. The system does not crash, and it can handle a lot of data. In addition, the system is incredibly flexible. You can scroll with columns, you can determine a large part of the layout of the screen yourself, you have the possibility to work with several users in the system at the same time, and you can export data from the system back to Excel. What is also nice: the software system is continuously expandable. You never run into the limits of the system. Additional programming is always an option.”
