Damen Shipyards builds ships that are checked on a daily basis for multiple internal and external requirements. Robert Jan van Houten: “Mechanics check the temperature and pressure of certain parts day in, day out. It is checked for leakages, cleanliness, or any strange error messages. Until now, has been done on paper. The disadvantage of paper is that you can only supply it to one person, in this case, the owner of the ship. But that information is relevant for several parties: the fleet owner, the onshore maintenance planner, the head of technical service, and Damen would also like to maintain this important data. That’s how we can make our boats better. Moreover, maintenance is linked to measurements. That is why we wanted to make the daily round book digital.”
Robert Jan: “We used an application from the App Store for a short time. We filled it in and delivered it to one or two customers. But we ran into so many restrictions that it became insufficient. When we started working with Codeless, we took this app as an example. The basic function of it was already correct, but the details had to match our organization and associated wishes.”
When Robert Jan held initial talks with Codeless, it felt good: “We quickly became enthusiastic and in no time we had a very solid plan. Then we sat down with a database architect, a user interface designer and Roland, the director. Together they were able to immediately answer any question that arose. That gave us confidence.” What was decisive for Robert Jan to make the decision to start working with Codeless was the mockup that Codeless delivered in the initial phase: “We initially had Codeless make a mockup, so that we could actually view some functionalities. This mockup was a great tool. It was immediately very visual and for me this was the defining reason to actually work with Codeless.”
Robert Jan was also pleased with the method and outcome. “I have found it very pleasant how Codeless handles things. You are just sitting conversing at the table, they use very direct lines of communication. Moreover, Codeless works very pragmatically. Using videos and other methods of displaying examples, they were able to show us “this works and this needs to be done differently”. In this way we quickly found the right direction together”.
“Codeless promised a well-functioning application. But they have exceeded our expectations. We only spoke about the minimum viable product but they eventually delivered an app with a number of extra features that were not even included in the initial briefing. For example, the backend looks insane. And it is these kinds of features, which have been developed free of charge, that complete the application.”
